ABOUT

Meet Lauren Skyles, FNP-C, IFMCP

Family Nurse Practitioner · Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner

Lauren is a Family Nurse Practitioner who spent years working in conventional medicine before running into its limits ... patients who felt unwell, whose labs looked "fine," and who were told there was nothing else to try.

Two things in her own life sent her looking deeper: her own health, and around the same time ... her son's diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Those two events forced her to take a hard look at diet, lifestyle, and the choices she was making for her family's health. She pursued formal education in functional medicine ... not just to find relief for herself, but to find every possible way to support her child.

Lauren Skyles, FNP-C, IFMCP — Family Nurse Practitioner and Functional Medicine Practitioner in St. Louis, MO

Our son, and the beginning of True Path.

When my son was diagnosed with autism at just two years old, I was told there were limited options ... primarily conventional therapies, and that was it. While I fully embraced and valued traditional therapies like speech, occupational therapy, and ABA, I couldn't accept that there was nothing more we could do to support his health and development.

I began exploring functional medicine, learning about gut health, nutrient deficiencies, environmental exposures like mold and heavy metals, overall metabolic function. My goal was not to replace traditional therapies, but to complement them. I wanted to give his body the support it needed to thrive.

Over time, we saw meaningful progress ... including a significant improvement with speech, going from nonverbal to completely verbal in a few months. Today, my son is thriving in a regular classroom with an IEP, and continues to grow, learn, and exceed expectations in his own unique way.

This journey is what led me to this work. I understand firsthand how overwhelming it can feel as a parent ... and how powerful it is to have more tools, more answers, and more hope.

As a mother of a child with autism, I understand the weight parents carry every single day trying to navigate what is best for their child.

WHAT I BELIEVE

What I believe about care.

I believe the body is always trying to tell you something. My job isn't to override it ... it's to listen carefully enough, and test specifically enough, to understand what it's saying.
I also believe functional medicine should not be in a tug-of-war with traditional medicine. The best outcomes ... especially for children ... come when therapies, conventional care, and functional medicine work together. We are here to add tools, not replace them.
